The Mexican Global Network, Toronto Chapter, Lariza Mendoza and Paulina Derbez will be launching the new Mexican cultural platform “Contemporary Mexico” at an event that forms part of the Windermere United Church concert series, with the concert “Mexico: From the Baroque to the Contemporary”. The event will feature the Monarca Ensemble, made up of Paulina Derbez (violin) and María Rosales (piano), along with special guest Naomi Barrón (cello).

Also taking part in the event will be Spanish-English translator Martin Boyd, who will recite the works of Mexican poets in English, and Alejandro Zamora, professor of Hispanic Studies at York University (Glendon College), who will give a talk on Mexican poetry. The music will be accompanied by projections of paintings from the eras in which the music was composed and works by Mexican contemporary artist Jaime Luján.

Monarca Ensemble will perform pieces for piano and violin from Mexico’s colonial era (Virreinato), as well as pieces by the modern Mexican composers Manuel M. Ponce (1882-1948) and Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940). To conclude the concert, they will be performing Ponce’s famous Romantic trio. A reception with wine and refreshments will be held after the concert.

The cultural platform “Contemporary Mexico” has been one of the dreams of violinist Paulina Derbez since she first arrived in Toronto in 2006. The objective of the platform, which already includes outstanding Mexican artists and academics based both in Canada and in Mexico, is to promote 20th and 21st century Mexican culture in Canada in areas such as music, literature, painting and sculpture, and photography. This platform is one of various projects being undertaken by the Mexican Global Network in Toronto.

The concert will take place on Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Windermere United Church, 356 Windermere Ave., Toronto. For more information on this event, click here.
