The best of our Latin American culture will be on display at the second edition of the Mississauga Latin Festival 2016, where you will have the chance to enjoy orchestras, folklore, traditional foods, handicrafts, children’s activities, a cultural exhibition and much more.
The Mississauga Latin Festival is an initiative of Colombia en Mississauga, an organization created in 2008 when Isabel Cuellar and her family recognized a lack of community activities in Mississauga for Colombians to celebrate and share their customs and traditions with other communities.
In December 2008, the group organized its first event, called “El Compartir Navideño” (“Sharing Christmas”) bringing together the whole Colombian community, as well as members of other Latin American communities, to enjoy the traditional Colombian Novena de Aguinaldos (“Yuletide Novena”), with the singing of Christmas carols, a very popular tradition in Colombian households.
In July 2009 they organized the first Celebration of Colombian Independence in Colombia, an event that celebrated Colombian culture through art, film, music, folklore and traditional food, while also promoting and supporting Colombian talent and non-profit organizations.
Since then, every year Colombia en Mississauga and the whole Colombian community resident in Mississauga has held a party on the first weekend of August, now known as the Mississauga Latin Festival, welcoming hundred of people form different parts of Ontario and the United States to enjoy this big event, which also includes a parade known as El Gran Desfile Colombiano.
